map art, Ile Kerguelen Island, Indian Ocean, French Southern and Antarctic Lands, Territoire des Terres australes et antarctiques fran├žaises, jfwoa

The shape of Kerguelen Island a french possession in the Indian Ocean, alternately known as “Desolation Island” (as coined by Captain Cook, its second visitor) is repeated and mirrored four times here.
The blue-and-violet background pattern of the top two panels is repeated in metallic and iridescent paints as the interior pattern in the lower two, set on a feathered monochrome background. The red-to-yellow interior pattern of the top panels, matched with the black-and-white lower-panel background, gives a distinct “autumn leaves” tone to the piece.
