Inspired by Rock Pond (also called “Hidden Pond”), a diminutive knob/face is seen poking through the very still water of a pond in the woods.
In real-life, Rock Pond is a lifeless body (due to high iron content) with only one small climbable feature (similar to the one in this painting). Ever since New York State took over the land, any references to Rock Pond on oficial trail maps have disappeared.
