From the site of the final campsite, tomorrow’s peak-bagging is finally in sight.

The potentiality of two ideals can be seen in this painting, depending on how it is illuminated: The calm, stark beauty of early twilight, reflected in the pure snow and ice, seems clear… ┬ábut then again, the harsh, wind-scoured peak and its perfectly deadly beauty is just as clear.

Painted primarily from memory, three devine ways to the tower are visible in near-devine lighting and the haunting weather phenomenon that very few people get to see. The delicate magic of Mohonk in the late afternoon is clear, even in an obscuring storm. Different viewing and lighting angles seem to bring out different aspects of this scene.

If Only The Gunks Were In Wyoming

If Only The Gunks Were In Wyoming

Shawangunk Gunks winter ice rock art painting jfwoa

A post-snowfall vision of the Gunks, both generic (which area’s overhang and boulder is this?) and specific (the access chimney at Lost City provides a similarly arranged scene), the strong mountains in the distance are decidedly the shapes of the central Rockys on the other side of the continent.

The View From The Bivy

The View From The Bivy

mountain expedition sunrise art painting jfwoa

The view past an oddly illuminated rock outcropping through a Wyoming-esque valley and meadow to almost silhouetted, very distant, very craggy mountain peaks, on a cloudy but crystal-clear, harsh yet benign late-autumn morning. (This is one of my personal favorites.)
